The Orissa State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) is
a joint venture undertaking of the Government of India and the state Government
of Orissa, constituted in 1974 under the Road Transportation Act 1950.
The OSRTC provides road transportation facilitates for
passengers in the state of Orissa, which has a population of 36,706,920.The
corporation operates 300 buses from the state capital
Bhubaneswar to the headquarters of the districts and beyond carrying thousands
of passengers daily on 150 routes.

Care is taken to provide bus
service to people living in the under-developed and remote areas of the state.
The corporation provides concessional travel facilities to the students,
handicapped, freedom fighters etc. The state has also a large number of private
buses operating in the populous areas. The corporation acts as a regulator in
the enforcement of passenger fares fixed by the government for the benefit of
the public. The corporation endeavours also to provide amenities of better
standards to the passengers at the bus stands and enroute. |

Orissa is located on India's east coast. It is bounded by the Bay of Bengal in the east and by the
states of West Bengal in the northeast, Jhadkhand in the north, Chatisghard in the West, and Andhra Pradesh
in the south. The state occupies an area of about 156,000 square kilometers. The capital of Orissa is Bhubaneswar,
which is also the most populated city in Orissa. Cuttack and Puri are two other cities with high populations.
As of 2001, when the last census was taken, there were 36,706,920 people living in the state of Orissa. Fewer than
14% of all citizens of Orissa live in cities. This number illustrates the great number of people live in the country
and they are agriculturists. The ratio of males (1000) to females is about 972. The common language spoken is Oriya. The average
individual income, annually, is 4,000 Rupees (USD 85.00 approximately). Over 76% of the people are dependent on agriculture.
Out of the gross cropped area of 87,46,000 hectares are 87,79,000 hectares are irrigated. Rice, pulses, oil-seeds, jute, sugarcane,
coconut and turmeric are important crops. The state contributes one-tenth of the rice production in India. Orissa is also rich in mineral
resources like Iron ore, Manganese ore, coal, Alumina, Chromium etc. Orissa is also a power surplus state. Products manufactured in
Orissa include textiles, paper, leather goods, cement, soap, glass, aluminum, and steel. The main exports are Iron ore, Chromium, Aluminium
and clothing. Orissa is also known world-wide for its fine handicrafts and stone sculpting works.
